Hurricane Milton slammed into Florida on Wednesday, October 9, 2024, as a Category 3 storm, drowning my little town with 16.5 inches of rain. When I finally returned home, a quiet numbness washed over me. Our fixer-upper, the home we had poured our sweat and dreams into, was now a flooded shell.
We had to gut it completely. I'm talking drywall cutouts, mold remediation, and every bit of flooring—including the subfloor—ripped out and replaced. Our family of five and our two dogs lived in two RVs on the property while the work was being completed. It was far from easy, but we are finally on the other side.
We moved back into the house this past Memorial Day weekend, and I'm hoping to have the last of the work done by mid-November. Today, I'm thrilled to finally share the master bedroom reveal.
A Glimpse of My Style
Entering the master bedroom from the hallway, this is the first glimpse. I've placed a boho-chic rack right here, not just for looks, but for function—it's my designated drop spot for my everyday purse and a few cozy hoodies.
This picture gives you a sense of the full layout of the master bedroom. We’ve split the room down the middle: the right side is mine and the left side is my husband’s.
His & Hers Hemnes
Sitting on my side of the bed, you can see the main furniture pieces: my dresser, mirror, and nightstand. I opted for the IKEA Hemnes set and I'm completely in love with it. Made from pine wood, it offers ample storage and the white stain shows off some of the beautiful, natural wood grain—it’s the perfect blend of simple design and warmth.
Over on the other side, we have my husband’s matching IKEA Hemnes chest of drawers and nightstand. This chest is a bit larger and gives him great storage, but I'll admit—it does creep into the window just a little. It's an imperfect fit that's taking some time to get used to, but the ample storage wins out!
The Design Dilemma
This is the view looking from the end of the bed. Eventually, I’d love to add a very narrow wooden bench here—that’s a future project! I'm also currently on the hunt for a chunky, camel- or brown-colored throw blanket to drape across the end for a cozy, fall-season look. Above the bed, the wall hanging I found at Ross for $34.99 is currently acting as a soft, boho replacement for a traditional headboard. What do you think? Should I keep it at this level, or lower it a bit? Let me know in the comments!
Details & Decor
When you're relaxing on the bed, your eyes are drawn straight to the wall between the his and hers closets. That's where I placed a wooden shelf—another great score from Ross! I currently have a little indoor oasis here, featuring ten different plants. This is one of the parts of the room that gets the most compliments, but don't let the photo deceive you: this plant stand is actually a bit larger than it looks!
I love using unique items for storage, like this ceramic piece I found at a thrift store. It's beautiful and currently holds my perfumes and deodorants. Using pieces like this is a simple, stylish trick to keep the room organized and completely clutter-free.
My final favorite detail is this clever succulent/aloe-shaped jewelry holder. It's a great little piece for keeping rings organized and came in a two-pack with a cactus (which my daughter immediately snagged for her own room!) for less than $20. I'll be sharing the link and more amazing deals in my Amazon Finds post this weekend!

The wooden shelf with the plants, the room already has a cozy vibe but I feel like the plants tie it in. The wall hanging looks good where it's at.
ReplyDeleteIt's always our daughters that snag our goodies. You guys have been through so much. Glad everything is finally coming together.
ReplyDeleteThe room is immaculate and I love the vibe it gives me.
